Methylglyoxal (MGO) in Italian Honey

نویسندگان

چکیده

Methylglyoxal (MGO) is recognized as being the bioactive component responsible for antibacterial activity of m?nuka honey. MGO content was investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-UV), in isocratic elution, to assess occurrence this compound mono- and multi-floral honey samples representative different botanical geographic origins Italy. Specifically, 110 from sweet cherry tree (Prunus avium L.), thyme (Thymus vulgaris almond amygdalus eucalyptus (Eucalyptus camaldulensis coriander (Coriandrum sativum cornflower (Centaurea cyanus thistle (Silybum marianum acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia citrus, honeydew multifloral were considered. The amount found types ranging 0.4 24.1 mg/kg. This study provides, first time, data on levels Italian honey, which showed higher concentrations compared honeys other species.

Kinetics of conversion of dihydroxyacetone to methylglyoxal in New Zealand mānuka honey: Part I--Honey systems.

The kinetics of conversion of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) to methylglyoxal (MGO) were investigated in mānuka honeys and DHA-doped clover honeys stored between 4 and 37°C. Both the disappearance of DHA and appearance of MGO were confirmed as overall, first order reactions, albeit probably composites of multiple reactions. Increasing the storage temperature accelerated the rate of DHA loss and the ini...

Preclinical development of MGO Manuka Honey microemulsion for blepharitis management

Objective To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial effects of cyclodextrin-complexed and uncomplexed Manuka honey on bacteria commonly associated with blepharitis, and in vivo rabbit eye tolerability of a cyclodextrin-complexed methylglyoxal (MGO) Manuka Honey microemulsion (MHME). Methods and analysis In vitro phase: Bacterial growth inhibition was assessed by area under the growth curve (AUC)...

Methylglyoxal-infused honey mimics the anti-Staphylococcus aureus biofilm activity of manuka honey: potential implication in chronic rhinosinusitis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Low pH, hydrogen peroxide generation, and the hyperosmolarity mechanisms of antimicrobial action are ubiquitous for all honeys. In addition, manuka honey has been shown to contain high concentrations of methylglyoxal (MGO), contributing the relatively superior antimicrobial activity of manuka honey compared to non-MGO honeys. In high concentrations, manuka honey is effecti...

Methylglyoxal may affect hydrogen peroxide accumulation in manuka honey through the inhibition of glucose oxidase.

Although hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is one of the major antibacterial factors in most honeys, it does not accumulate in medical-grade manuka honey. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of artificially added methylglyoxal (MGO) on H₂O₂ accumulation in natural non-manuka honeys. H₂O₂ concentrations in the honey solutions were determined using a fluorimetric assay. Two, the most pote...

Methylglyoxal—A Potential Risk Factor of Manuka Honey in Healing of Diabetic Ulcers

Honey has been considered as a remedy in wound healing since ancient times. However, as yet, there are inadequate supportive robust randomized trials and experimental data to fully accept honey as an effective medical product in wound care. Manuka honey has been claimed to have therapeutic advantages over other honeys. Recently, it has been documented that the pronounced antibacterial activity ...
